Club Activity Areas

1. Language Direction

  • Hieroglyphics and Calligraphy (Shodō): studying kanji radicals, stroke order, and the art of brush writing. Competitions for the most beautiful character can also be organized.
  • Conversation Club (Kaiwa): discussing everyday topics and role-playing situations such as in a shop, at the airport, or during introductions.
  • Phonetic Training: practicing pronunciation, as well as the specific Japanese intonation and rhythm.
  • Body Language and Etiquette: learning the bowing system (ojigi), polite speech forms (keigo), and the way Japanese people communicate nonverbally.

2. Pop Culture and Media (Edutainment)

This is the most popular area among young people.

  • Anime Club: watching clips without dubbing, analyzing slang, fixed expressions, and cultural references.
  • J-Pop and Karaoke: studying song lyrics, translating them, and singing together to practice speech rhythm.
  • Manga Studio: reading manga in the original language and learning specific onomatopoeic expressions, of which there are hundreds in Japanese.

3. Traditional Culture (Experience)

  • Origami: the art of paper folding, which develops fine motor skills and helps students understand instructions in Japanese.
  • Tea Ceremony (Chanoyu): learning the basics of the ritual and tasting matcha tea.
  • Japanese Games: learning to play Go, Shogi (Japanese chess), or Hanafuda (a traditional card game).
  • Culinary Workshops: preparing simple dishes such as onigiri, rolls, and miso soup while learning the names of ingredients.

4. Project and Event Activities

This is what brings the club together.

  • Festivals: organizing a mini Japanese culture festival at a school or university (Bunkasai).
  • Meetings with Native Speakers: organizing online calls or live meetings with Japanese people.
